Proper hygiene is essential to a healthy lifestyle.

Establishing Why

Grooming will impact more aspects of life than you think. More likely than not, your appearance will be your first opportunity to present yourself. Whether you’re meeting up with friends, a date or your boss, being well-groomed will always make a great impression.

Never go into another situation feeling uncertain about your hygiene again. Wouldn’t that feel nice?

1. Routine

The key is to create a routine that is easy to remember, effortless to accomplish and effective in practice. Let’s be honest, nobody wants to spend an hour in the bathroom every night before bed or first thing in the morning.
Whether you lack time or motivation, finding a routine that works best for you will make the world of difference when it comes to your overall health and appearance.

My personal grooming routine:

Bi-Weekly: Haircut

2. Oral Health

Let’s assume everybody has mastered brushing their teeth by now, it is still important to highlight the finer details. Simply brushing your teeth does not suffice.

To achieve total mouth health, you should be brushing, flossing, and rinsing at least twice daily. It is important to take care of your mouth today to prevent any problems in the future.

The CDC recommendations:

  • Brush teeth thoroughly twice a day
  • Floss daily to remove dental plaque
  • Limit alcohol use
  • Eliminate tobacco use
  • Visit your dentist at least once a year

3. Skin Care

Washing your face with soap and water does not quite cut it. Washing your face daily with a true cleanser will rid your skin of dirt and oils. Be sure to complement your face wash with a moisturizer that contains SPF to rehydrate and protect your skin from the sun. If you want to take it a step further, we recommend you use a exfoliant once weekly to remove dead skin. It is important to note the difference in a physical face scrub and a chemical exfoliant. I will link off to a great article published by the American Academy of Dermatology  if would like to learn more.

While choosing products, it is important to remember that everybody’s skin is different. Educate yourself about the ingredients in the products you choose. Try to find products that use natural ingredients.

Ingredients to avoid:
  • Fragrances
  • Parabens
  • Formaldehyde
  • Phthalates

If you have sensitive skin or skin illnesses, we always recommend contacting a medical professional before using any products.

4. Hair & Beard

One thing that will set you apart from every other guy is finding a barber you can trust. A great barber should be able to educate you while they cut your hair.

Hair Style

Everybody’s face shape and hair texture is different. You may see someone rocking a haircut that you love but it doesn’t look quite right on you. Work with your barber to find a hairstyle that fits your face shape.

From stubble to Viking, the hair on your face requires just as much attention as the hair on your head. Much like your hair, finding a facial hair style that fits you can change your appearance entirely. Be sure to shampoo, moisturize and maintain!

5. Deodorant

Depending on your specific situation and your hygiene goals, you may need to choose between an antiperspirant and a deodorant.

A Deodorant works by removing or concealing unpleasant smells caused by bacteria.

An Antiperspirant works by preventing or reducing perspiration. This product will contain aluminum.

6. Lifestyle

Products aside, there are changes that you could make in your daily life that will positively impact your personal hygiene.

Make it a rule to get a minimum or 7-8 hours of quality sleep per night. It is one of the best habits you will ever have. A good nights sleep will eliminate and prevent those stubborn black circles under your eyes.

It will make a substantial difference in your overall health and its free!

Drinking water can prevent dehydration, a condition that can cause unclear thinking, mood change, the body to overheat, constipation, and kidney stones. Most health professionals recommend consuming around 1 gallon of water per day. Purchase a high quality water bottle and keep it with you at all times

7. ManScape

The subject that nobody want to talk about. Here’s the deal, the main problem with excessive body hair is the accumulation of dirt, sweat, and bacteria that will inevitable result in body odor. If not for the visual appeal, at least consider removing excess hair for the hygiene aspect. Even if you can’t smell it, the people around you can. Your partner will appreciate it, trust us.

With that out of the way, let’s talk removal. If trimming is your style, please do not use the same the trimmer downstairs that you do on your face. Instead, opt for a trimmer that is specifically designed for this.

Avoid using any deodorants or fragrances on these areas. Choose a powder to stay fresh instead.

Individually, the difference isn’t always noticeable but if left unkept, neglecting these aspects of grooming can produce some very unpleasant results.
